Tips and advice for new parents.
1. Stock up the freezer and general food stocks before the birth.
Stock up your freezer with enough pre prepared meals to get you through the first
10 days/month at the least. Or accept offers from friends and relatives who offer
to help in this way. Shepherds Pie is always a good standby when you are tired and
exhausted.
2. Prepare the nursery before the birth.
Check how everything works, read instructions etc. Before your baby arrives home,
especially:- the sterilizer, Car seat, make sure both parents can fit it and adjust
the straps. (Don’t leave it to when you are leaving the hospital and are struggling
in the pouring rain with your new baby) Check that the pram fits in the boot, folds
up easily and can you lift it in without injuring yourself. Make sure the changing
station is the right height for you.
3. Keep visitors to a minimum - to allow you and your baby to settle at home.
Or ask them to take the baby for a while so you can have a break.
Avoid talking on the phone while feeding - initially concentrate on getting it right
and give your full attention during the period leading to bed time. However to help
prevent feeling overwhelmed and isolated, have a support network which suits you,
whether its friends and family. NCT, your health visitor, etc
Remember - Babies do not come with a set of instructions neither will your baby have
read any instruction manual. You will be given conflicting advice. Take what is useful
to you and your lifestyle and disregard the rest.
